Traversal¶
Traversal is the physical expression of God's awakening. The player begins human-passing and earthbound, learns to move with forces no ordinary body can produce, and eventually flies across a world whose continental interiors remain approximately the size they were before the merge.
This document owns player and NPC locomotion, flight, movement progression, high-speed travel, and the boundary between traversal and spatial topology. Geography owns the shape and scale of the world. World Simulation owns what continues to happen throughout it. The combat body owns the forces that make movement physical. Camera and Player Perception owns how that body and only the world it can perceive remain visible while moving.
The Principle¶
Walk among people. Run between places. Fly between regions.
Scale is not empty time to be deleted. It is the distance between cultures, climates, wars, and consequences. Traversal makes that scale playable without pretending it is small.
Each mode changes what the player can perceive and participate in:
- Walking is intimate. It exposes speech, evidence, small paths, interiors, and ordinary life.
- Ground speed crosses local and regional distance while retaining contact with terrain, roads, settlements, and danger.
- Low flight crosses obstacles and reveals the land, but exposes the flyer and carries physical consequences into inhabited space.
- High-altitude flight crosses continental distance. It sacrifices close observation for reach; the world continues below.
Liquid locomotion¶
Traversal owns the locomotion query while Environment, the World Simulation's environmental authority, owns liquid state. Running through water consumes depth, flow, material resistance and support to produce a physical route with contact, wakes, splashes, wetness and possible sediment. Running on water is legal only when an explicit force or magic rule publishes support; the step, depression, rim and wake must follow that support rather than a hidden solid surface. Oil, mud and water retain distinct responses. The Moses event uses the same rule and cannot bypass The River's authored admission, lethal and transformation rules; its exceptional living entry is explicit story state, not generic water support.
The modes are not a ladder in which every later option replaces every earlier one. A player who flies over a region reaches the destination sooner and knows less about what happened along the way.
Why God Can Fly¶
God can fly because the tribrid body can synthesize three different capacities:
- Angel nature supplies the architecture. Wings and angelic force control make sustained flight physically legible to the body.
- Human nature supplies uncapped capacity. Ordinary angels can fly, but their speed, force, and development remain beneath Michael's installed ceiling. God's human foundation can continue beyond it.
- Demon nature supplies analysis and control. It reads forces, damage, terrain, weather, and trajectories with increasing precision.
- Darkfire binds the three. It is not a fourth unrelated movement power. It is the visible expression of the synthesis learning to act as one body.
Flight is therefore not evidence that God was secretly omnipotent from birth. The ability is dormant with the angel and demon natures, then becomes controllable as the player survives, observes, and acts. The human foundation remains the reason development has no fixed ceiling.
Angels can fly without this synthesis. Their flight is mature, culturally normal, and capped. God begins below their competence and can eventually exceed their reach.
Awakening Through the Acts¶
Traversal progression is part of the pilgrimage, not a detached skill tree.
| Story phase | Physical expression | World function |
|---|---|---|
| Act 1: Eden | Human locomotion. Under extreme danger, an involuntary air-righting or impossible fall survival may reveal that the body is not entirely human. No controlled flight. | Establishes ordinary scale, vulnerability, and home before power changes distance. |
| Act 2: The Merged World | Abnormal acceleration, braking, balance, long jumps, and brief powered arcs emerge under pressure. The player can survive momentum they still cannot fully control. | Makes the first regional journeys faster without erasing roads, witnesses, or terrain. |
| Act 3: The Unraveling | Controlled descent, air correction, repeated powered arcs, and short low-altitude flight become deliberate. | The body's contradiction becomes visible at the same time the world's contradictions break. |
| Act 4: Earth | Sustained low flight and the first high-altitude continental journeys become practical. | The return to Eden tests whether speed has made the player attentive or merely distant. |
| Acts 5-7 | Mature flight is tested by Hell's and Heaven's architecture, suppression, confined space, weather, combat, and topological thresholds. | Capability cannot bypass meaning. The pilgrimage still has an order. |
Full practical flight unlocks before The River. The River changes knowledge, identity, and expression; it is not a movement upgrade awarded to only one ending. Real God and True God retain equivalent practical access to the world after the split, though True God's complete information and Real God's incomplete information change how each reads a route.
The exact story encounter that triggers each step remains an implementation decision for the act owners. The progression order and pre-River parity are fixed.
A Physical Body, Not Noclip¶
Traversal never sets a transform and calls the result movement. Player input expresses intent; the body produces forces and accepts consequences.
Ground Movement¶
Ground acceleration depends on available force, body mass, posture, traction, slope, and surface condition. Braking requires distance. Turning at speed requires lateral grip. A jump inherits the velocity that produced it. Mud, ice, loose debris, stairs, vegetation, walls, and crowds are physical facts rather than cosmetic speed modifiers.
At extreme speed, a careless footfall can break material, throw debris, injure people, or destabilize the player. Precision is a learned capability. Raw force arrives before perfect control.
Airborne Commitment and Powered Correction¶
An ordinary jump is a commitment because leaving the ground removes the reaction force that would produce another step. The body remains subject to its inherited linear and angular momentum, gravity, drag, collision, and any other forces already acting on it. It cannot perform a second ground-relative dodge in mid-air merely because the player presses a direction.
That rule does not mean every airborne body is absolutely ballistic. Wings, darkfire, magic, recoil, wind, a grip on structure, impact, or another genuine force source may change the trajectory. Early God has little or no deliberate authority over those corrections. Mature God and angels can apply sustained aerial force, but the correction is still limited by force, mass, orientation, momentum, turn radius, concentration, injury, suppression, and available space.
Combat therefore uses the same progression as traversal. A human-scale jump may clear a low sweep while committing the landing. A powered arc can add limited correction. Mature flight permits three-dimensional offline movement—banking, climbing, diving, braking, or lateral translation—without creating an AerialDodge state or contact exception. Footwork owns how those trajectories function as evasion inside an exchange.
Flight¶
Flight has acceleration, lift or directed support, drag, wind, turn radius, climb and dive energy, hover effort, stalls, collision, falling, and landing. Wings participate when the current body and expression expose them, but wings alone do not erase mass or momentum. Darkfire can supply and redirect force; it cannot make the body cease to be present.
A flyer cannot reverse continental velocity inside a room, pass through a wall, or land at cruise speed without consequence. High-speed routes therefore have phases:
- move clear of people and structures;
- climb into a safe corridor;
- accelerate;
- cruise;
- decelerate before the destination;
- descend through increasingly detailed airspace;
- land with a physically supportable velocity and surface.
Hovering is possible but not free. Sustained stationary force should read as effort, instability, and environmental disturbance rather than an animation pose disconnected from physics.
Failure and Recovery¶
Loss of control produces recoverable physical states: skid, tumble, stall, uncontrolled descent, impact, damaged wing or limb, disorientation, and forced landing. Greater power increases the consequence of bad control. Progression improves force authority and perception; it does not repeal cause and effect.
Target Speed Envelopes¶
These are prototype targets, not immutable lore measurements. They define the order of magnitude required to preserve world scale while keeping traversal legible. Playtesting, physics stability, streaming evidence, sonic consequences, and encounter readability may move them.
| Mode | Target envelope | Intended use |
|---|---|---|
| Walking and ordinary running | human scale | Settlements, evidence, interiors, conversation, close exploration |
| Early darkfire ground movement | roughly 40-120 km/h | Roads, pursuit, the space between nearby settlements |
| Mature ground movement | roughly 200-500 km/h | Regional crossing where terrain contact matters |
| Sustained low flight | roughly 400-800 km/h | Reconnaissance, obstacle crossing, regional movement |
| High-altitude continental flight | roughly 1,200-3,000 km/h | Long journeys between distant regions |
The upper envelopes are not normal combat strafe speeds. Entering close combat, a settlement, dense forest, cave, Heaven circle, or Hell circle requires shedding velocity. Combat movement remains readable because the body cannot carry cruise conditions into a constrained exchange without changing the exchange into a collision disaster.
Supersonic travel near the ground produces shock, sound, pressure, debris, panic, and damage. The safe high-speed corridor is high because the world is inhabited, not because the effects are disabled there. Weather and altitude still matter.
World Scale and Travel Time¶
The merged world preserves one complete 510,072,000 km² Earth surface while compressing the visible former oceans into channels and re-embedding their source domain through the authored transform. Within it, the continuous supercontinent contains roughly 135 million square kilometres of former-Earth land, while transformed Antarctica contributes roughly another 14 million within the topologically isolated Nadir. Each of Hell's seven circles and Heaven's seven circles is an equal 510,072,000 km² surface projection, for a primary world ledger of 7,651,080,000 km². The supercontinent is expected to be on the order of 14,000-20,000 kilometres across after the final authored transform. Eden to Ground Zero is expected to be on the order of 10,000-15,000 kilometres.
Those ranges are design constraints pending the final geographic transform. They are not permission to rescale every landmass until a crossing fits a conventional open-world map.
At that scale:
- walking the whole pilgrimage is physically possible but intentionally enormous;
- mature ground travel makes regional journeys practical;
- high-altitude flight makes continental journeys practical in hours rather than weeks;
- each admitted circle supports real long-range travel and exploration across an Earth-sized domain, even though the critical route need not traverse its maximum span;
- folds solve broken adjacency and realm access, not ordinary distance.
The broad landform may begin from real-Earth elevation data, but source data is not canon by itself. The authored post-merge transform, seam network, damage, hydrology, settlements, and story anchors define the world players inhabit.
Flight Changes the World¶
Angels have always understood three-dimensional movement. Post-merge societies therefore cannot behave as if every threat, road, wall, or border exists only on the ground.
- Angel patrols, scouts, couriers, and military formations use altitude.
- Settlements use roofs, overhangs, interior courts, concealment, lookout towers, and protected approaches.
- Factions develop warning systems, ranged responses, aerial denial, decoys, and tactics for forcing flyers to land.
- Weather, visibility, smoke, celestial debris, volcanic updrafts, and ruined vertical infrastructure shape routes.
- A fast or luminous arrival can be seen and heard far beyond the landing point.
Flight does not make ground culture obsolete. Most people remain ground-bound. Food, shelter, trade, ruins, evidence, and relationships remain on the surface. An angel may cross a mountain; the settlement behind it still lives by the pass.
Evidence, Witnesses, and Consequences¶
Movement is observable action. A witness may see a figure launch, hear a shockwave, find impact damage, or see only a distant darkfire trail. These produce different claims. Speed does not create omniscience in the witness system, and distance does not erase provenance.
The player can arrive before a rumor, outrun a courier, or be recognized by consequences that arrived first. A route over an unwitnessed desert and a low pass above a settlement should not produce the same social record. Faction Reputation owns how those observations propagate.
Traversal also spends attention. A player crossing at high altitude does not receive close evidence from events below merely because the simulation processed them. They may later encounter survivors, ruins, records, and testimony. The game preserves the difference between what happened and what God witnessed.
Camera Through Ground, Cave, and Flight¶
The camera follows the physical route; it does not create a second route through the environment. Procedural terrain and architecture may derive continuous camera manifolds, transition portals, clearances, and view-local cuttable surfaces alongside collision, navigation, visibility, and acoustics. The runtime camera can then anticipate a tunnel bend, doorway, vertical shaft, landing, or flight turn instead of reacting after the body has already entered it.
In a cave or narrow structure, the preferred view may remain outside the enclosing shell and remove a bounded part of that shell for the main view. This is a view-local camera aperture, not noclip, terrain destruction, or permission to reveal the next chamber. Collision and movement remain unchanged. Shoulder or close-body framing is a later fallback when an authored or gameplay-significant surface cannot be cut.
Flight camera prediction is three-dimensional. It follows the body's velocity, intended route, turn authority, braking envelope, wing and weapon sweep, likely contact side, emergency landing volume, and the next procedural camera transition. It preserves a stable physical or authored up reference rather than rolling arbitrarily with every bank. At high altitude it needs broad-form and horizon truth; before descent it demands the fine collision, topology, visibility, and camera-affordance data required for a continuous arrival.
Movement can change what God perceives. Camera motion alone cannot. A free look behind the body, a locked target behind cover, or an ideal cinematic angle outside a wall never expands the player-character's authorized visible set.
Topology Cannot Be Outrun¶
Flight and speed operate inside continuous space. They do not repair space the merge disconnected.
The Apex and The Nadir¶
The Nadir is the entirety of transformed Antarctica. The Apex is the public name for The Throne itself: a source-less celestial structure over the former North Pole ocean, not an island containing a separate final room. Both polar endpoints are isolated from the continuous supercontinent by visible water that marks absent adjacency rather than a normal moat. Walking, swimming, sailing, flying, tunnelling, falling, and ballistic travel cannot cross either boundary. A traveller who follows the apparent direction encounters a continuous boundary failure, displacement, or return rather than the opposite shore.
The boundary is not a capability-suppression field. The primary fold restores one specific missing adjacency into the outer Nadir. Once God emerges there, movement is physical again: walking and flight work subject to weather, terrain, architecture, and ordinary physical consequences. Crossing the Nadir from its outer fold arrival region to the South Pole is real continental travel; the fold does not deposit God directly into Hell. There is no equivalent exterior fold into the Apex. God reaches The Throne from inside the world by descending every circle of Hell and ascending every circle of Heaven.
The fold network is not fast travel and is not made redundant by flight.
Heaven and Hell¶
Circle order is architectural, causal, and topological. Every circle owns a complete Earth-sized domain, but a shared canonical coordinate or a sectional diagram that places paired tiers side by side does not make them spatially adjacent. The next circle becomes adjacent only when its threshold is traversed. Flying upward through Heaven or downward through Hell can cross the currently admitted surface and its open volume; it cannot skip a circle, reach a Throne from outside, cross into a corresponding coordinate, or approach the sequence from the side.
Suppression in individual circles may weaken, redirect, or constrain traversal, but the primary rule is stronger than a power lock: there is no bypass route present to fly through.
Simulation and Streaming Contract¶
The same destination must remain causally compatible whether the player approaches on foot, at mature ground speed, from high altitude, through a descent corridor, or from a fold exit.
The world implementation must therefore:
- keep authored planetary form and story anchors as semantic truth;
- carry
SurfaceIdthrough every position, region, demand, cache, persistence, and transition record; - share immutable canonical terrain inputs while keeping each surface's morph, history, deltas, and derived state independent;
- keep people, places, ownership, events, ecology, and damage persistent without requiring every region to be physically embodied;
- predict the player's route, possible landing area, braking distance, sightlines, and interaction horizon;
- predict camera configuration-space corridors, transitions, and aperture/cap data without using the camera as a perception source;
- prepare collision and gameplay truth before visual ornament;
- promote semantic entities into physical representations without changing their identity;
- compose deterministic baseline generation with persistent world deltas;
- preserve cross-region terrain, water, road, ecology, and event continuity;
- prefetch the destination surface across an approaching circle threshold without exposing it as Euclidean adjacency;
- degrade representation before it changes truth when a deadline cannot be met.
The player must never be able to expose a different past by arriving too quickly. A late visual refinement may improve a tree or building. It may not replace the settlement, resurrect a dead witness, move an authored seam, or contradict the event record.
The corresponding HellspawnEngine authority is PROCEDURAL_SPATIAL_STREAMING_DESIGN.md. Darkfire owns the experiential requirement. The engine owns how content demand, deadlines, realization, and residency satisfy it.
Non-Goals¶
- Traversal is not teleportation disguised by a fast animation.
- Folds are not a convenience network for crossing ordinary kilometres.
- Full scale does not mean fully realizing every square metre at maximum detail simultaneously.
- Shared canonical coordinates do not permit cross-surface cache aliasing, mutation leakage, visibility, collision, navigation, or travel.
- Procedural generation does not own landmarks, faction truth, story events, or the post-merge continental transform.
- Flight does not make God intangible, silent, consequence-free, or socially omniscient.
- Camera freedom does not create sight, topology, or a route that God's body and perception do not possess.
- The speed envelopes are not final tuning values until measured prototypes support them.
The Rule¶
God's power changes how distance is crossed. It does not make distance, bodies, witnesses, or consequences unreal.
