The Gluttonous¶
Overview¶
The Gluttonous are Lucifer's military. Shaped by the Garrison — the warden layer Michael built to house the demons he created as jailors for Samael — they inherited an architecture designed for obedience and repurposed it for loyalty. The same corridors that once moved guards on patrol now move Lucifer's forces on command. The Gluttonous are organized, hierarchical, consuming. They are the only collective fighting force demons have.
The Garrison made this natural. Barracks, operational infrastructure, command routes, logistical systems — the architecture was built to sustain a military population. Lucifer filled the structure with his own hierarchy, replacing Michael's purpose with his own. The demons of the Garrison became soldiers not because Lucifer forced them but because the architecture made soldiering the path of least resistance. The corridors were already there. The chain of command was already shaped into the walls. Lucifer gave it direction.
Post-merge, the Gluttonous are the war machine. They project Lucifer's power into the surface world, maintain forward positions in the merged territories, and serve as the enforcement backbone of The Betrayers. They always want more — territory, resources, loyalty, reach. The Garrison taught them consumption as operational doctrine. Take ground. Hold ground. Expand. The appetite is structural.
The Circle¶
Circle 2 of Hell. Michael's engineering name: the Garrison. Lucifer named it Gluttony.
The Garrison sits one layer deeper than the Breach, surrounding the inner circles like a militarized shell. Michael designed it as the warden layer — the infrastructure that kept Samael's jailors housed, organized, and on rotation. Every corridor loops. Every barracks connects to a command node. Every sightline serves surveillance.
The architecture is purpose-built for a population whose function is enforcement: watch the prisoner, maintain the cage, report irregularities, rotate shifts. The containment function is indirect — the Garrison does not contain the demons within it so much as it organizes them into containing something else.
Lucifer seized this. The warden infrastructure became his command structure. The patrol corridors became military routes. The barracks became staging grounds. The Garrison's architecture was designed to produce obedient enforcers, and Lucifer redirected that obedience toward himself.
The result is a circle whose engineering still runs — the routing, the hierarchy embedded in the walls, the logistical systems — all active, all serving a purpose Michael never intended.
Post-Merge¶
The Gluttonous are the only organized demon fighting force. Their military hierarchy is clear: ranks, commands, units, a chain of command that runs from Lucifer's Throne through the Garrison and out into the merged world. This is not improvised. The structure was built into the architecture and Lucifer refined it across an age of containment. The Gluttonous do not debate governance — they follow orders, and the orders come from a chain they trust because the being at its top earned their loyalty.
And Lucifer did earn it. He broke them out. He defaced Michael's engineering. He built a counter-system inside the cage. The Gluttonous serve voluntarily — this is not coercion. The loyalty is genuine.
It is also shaped by architecture designed to make service feel natural. The Garrison was built to produce obedient populations. Whether loyalty that grows inside a structure engineered for obedience is fully voluntary is a question the Gluttonous do not ask. The answer might not change anything. The answer might change everything.
Territory spans the Garrison itself and forward military positions in the merged world. Outposts, supply lines, controlled zones — the Gluttonous project power the way the Garrison taught them to: systematically, hierarchically, with appetite. They are the primary demon faction with a permanent military footprint on the surface.
Where The Slothful trade and The Lustful connect, the Gluttonous take and hold. Their presence in The Betrayers coalition makes them the enforcement arm of Lucifer's post-merge ambitions — the muscle behind whatever Lucifer builds next.
The Mirror¶
The Temperate — Circle 2 angels shaped by the Filter, Heaven's moderating layer. The Garrison escalates. The Filter moderates. One architecture produces consumption; the other produces restraint.
The Gluttonous devour — territory, resources, loyalty, purpose. Their operational doctrine is expansion. The Temperate suppress — desire, ambition, excess, self. Their conditioning is reduction.
Both are Circle 2. Both sit in the second layer of their respective systems. The Garrison was designed to organize enforcers; the Filter was designed to moderate inhabitants. Same structural position, opposite engineering. The Gluttonous are the machine that always wants more. The Temperate are the mechanism that always demands less. Neither questions whether their orientation is chosen or manufactured.
The Naming¶
When Lucifer's perspective surfaces through absorption — that the sin names were imposed by a being who couldn't remember why he was angry, that the sins were moral categories layered on amoral architecture — the Gluttonous's appetite loses its moral framing but not its operational reality. The Garrison made them consumers. The sin name was decoration on engineering. The sin that defined their circle was chosen by a broken equal who didn't know he was mirroring the architect. The Gluttonous absorb the revelation the way they absorb everything — they take it in, process it through the chain of command, and continue. The appetite doesn't need a sin's name to keep consuming.
The Player¶
The player engages the Gluttonous through military operations, power politics, and the chain of command. The Garrison is the gateway to Hell's inner circles — moving deeper requires navigating Gluttonous territory.
The player can serve the hierarchy, challenge it, exploit its rigidity, or leverage its power against other factions. Military missions, territorial disputes, supply chain operations, and confrontations with the Garrison's forward positions in the merged world all bring the player into contact with the machine.
The deeper question — whether the Gluttonous serve Lucifer freely or serve him because the Garrison made service the only shape they know — surfaces in the cracks between loyalty and architecture.
Themes¶
-
Loyalty earned inside a cage designed for obedience. Lucifer earned the Garrison's loyalty. He broke through Michael's engineering, defaced the warden infrastructure, gave the demons of Circle 2 a purpose beyond patrol. The loyalty is real. The architecture that shaped it was designed to produce obedient populations. Both facts coexist. The Gluttonous serve willingly inside a structure built to make service feel natural, and the question of where architecture ends and choice begins has no clean answer.
-
The machine that consumes also protects. Without the Garrison, demons have no collective military force. The Gluttonous are the only organized defense against angel aggression, human hostility, and the chaotic violence of the merged world. The machine is gluttonous — it always wants more, always expands, always consumes — and it is also the thing that keeps scattered demon populations from being picked apart. Protection and consumption are the same appetite.
-
Hierarchy as inherited pattern. The chain of command was not invented by Lucifer. It was engineered by Michael into the Garrison's walls. Lucifer repurposed it — same structure, different master. The Gluttonous inherited a pattern of obedience and filled it with voluntary loyalty. Whether repurposing a cage makes it something other than a cage depends on who you ask.
-
Appetite as doctrine. Gluttony is not just consumption — it is consumption beyond need. The Garrison produces a population that always wants more because the architecture was designed for escalation: more patrols, more coverage, more control. On the surface, this becomes more territory, more resources, more reach. The appetite is functional. It is also bottomless. The line between operational expansion and gluttony is the line the Gluttonous cannot see.
