Continuity, Death, and the Rivers¶
This page owns the private causal rules for personhood, physical death, self-restoration, River preservation, the formation of Present God and 333, the Game 3 Collective, and the two-River ending. Character and game pages own the scenes and relationships built from these rules.
Canon Status¶
The following points are locked private canon:
- A person has one unique causal continuity and a current embodiment.
- Continuity is not memory, body, a database record, or an objectively readable soul identifier.
- One personal continuity cannot fork into two copies while both remain the same person.
- A living embodiment normally maintains the boundary between one self and another.
- Biological death removes that embodiment. It does not automatically decide whether the personal continuity persists.
- A River field catches unembodied continuities and keeps each person distinct from every other person it holds.
- The River does not sort by species, religion, virtue, sin, salvation, or damnation. Its grey removes category judgments while preserving person-to-person boundaries.
- Real God and the First Child possess self-restoring embodiment. A viable restoration relation lets the same continuity return to a rebuilt body.
- The two post-Merge Rivers are two distinct people, called River A and River B in private design language.
- River B enters the God of the True history through full foundational entry and ends its separate personhood. That God continues transformed as True God.
- True God later uses direct experience of River B's entry to identify the possibility of a bounded entry for River A.
- River A authors and chooses that bounded entry. Real God chooses to receive it. True God cannot consent for either person or guarantee the outcome.
- River A ends its separate personhood, but Real God's personal continuity, human embodiment, physical killability, self-restoration, ordinary legibility, and incomplete knowledge remain.
- Real God becomes Present God after the bounded entry.
- Present God and True God later form 333 through two independent final confirmations.
- 333 carries both realized histories, both River histories, and the dead already held in both histories without collapsing corresponding people into one person.
- 333 has River-derived boundary-preserving capacity but no valid universal River topology for new deaths in the integrated history.
- Newly dead continuities initially remain coherent, then lose their boundaries and begin to overlap. That failure produces the Game 3 Collective.
- 333 earns 666 by learning to govern the conditions of union and distinction without claiming ownership of the people affected.
- In the River ending, 666's personal continuity ends once and produces two causal successors, the Past River and the Future River. Neither successor is 666, Present God, True God, Real God, River A, or River B restored.
The exact crisis thresholds, full Game 3 campaign, final ending set, MMO restoration economy, and presentation of the fixed-point history remain design work.
Person, Continuity, and Embodiment¶
The governing model is:
PERSON
|
+-- unique causal continuity
| "this remains one someone"
|
+-- current embodiment
"this body presently expresses them"
Continuity is not perfect memory. Amnesia does not create a new person. It is not material sameness because a living body changes constantly and a self-restoring body can be rebuilt after physical death. It is not a hidden serial number that Michael, True God, 333, the player, or the engine can read and assign.
Continuity is a causal fact. One worldline may change radically while remaining singular. It may converge with another continuity through consent. It may end. It may produce descendants or causal successors. It cannot be copied into two simultaneous claimants who are both the original person.
The game presents evidence, memory, testimony, consequence, and relationship. It does not reduce identity to a diagnostic field that supplies an infallible verdict.
The Boundary of a Living Self¶
While a person is alive, embodiment supplies enough continuing physical and mental structure to maintain:
Memory changes, injury occurs, consciousness stops during sleep, and every material part may eventually be replaced. The living process still maintains one bounded self.
At biological death, that embodiment can no longer maintain the boundary. The continuity becomes unembodied. What follows depends on the available death topology:
body dies
|
+-- valid River field
| |
| +-- continuity remains distinct
|
+-- no valid River field
|
+-- boundary weakens over time
|
+-- memories and identities overlap
The River therefore does not manufacture souls or decide what a person means. It preserves a distinction the person already possessed.
Grey Without Erasure¶
The River is grey because it does not separate the dead into Michael's categories. Human, angel, demon, faithful, secular, loyal, rebellious, saved, and damned do not become death jurisdictions inside the water.
That absence of category separation does not mean every person dissolves into one consciousness. The River holds without judging while maintaining the boundary between one held person and another. Its oldest loneliness follows from that function: it carries everyone and remains unable to turn their company into its own self.
Identity Operations¶
These operations must remain distinct:
| Operation | Causal result |
|---|---|
| Death with River preservation | Embodiment ends. The same personal continuity remains unembodied and distinct in a River field. |
| Self-restoration | A viable embodiment is rebuilt and receives the one existing continuity. The body does not manufacture a copy. |
| Absorption | A person is taken without adequate consent and remains co-located inside the absorber. Release returns the same person with the experience of having been carried. |
| Foundational River entry | A River freely ends its separate personhood inside a consenting God and becomes foundational to the recipient's embodiment. River B's entry produces True God. |
| Bounded River entry | A River freely ends its separate personhood and entrusts a delimited inheritance to a consenting recipient whose personal and embodied continuity remains primary. River A's entry produces Present God. |
| Equal integration | Separate personhoods converge into one non-forking successor that continues both causal histories. Neither predecessor remains an unchanged internal passenger. Present God and True God form 333 this way. |
| Descent | Parents remain separate people and a child begins a new continuity. The First Child is causally descended from both Gods without being either parent. |
| Bifurcation | One personal continuity ends and more than one new causal successor begins. None of the successors is the ended person. The River ending uses this operation. |
Consent changes the moral and causal structure of an operation. It does not make all operations equivalent. A forced absorption does not become equal integration because the taker calls it necessary. A bounded entry does not secretly preserve the entering River as a trapped voice. A bifurcation does not create two copies of the person who ended.
The Two Rivers¶
The original Merge realizes two complete histories. Each contains a River continuation with effectively identical early experience. Correspondence does not establish identity. River A and River B are two real people for the same reason that Real God and True God are two real people.
REAL HISTORY TRUE HISTORY
River A River B
| |
remains externally embodied freely enters God
| |
Real God True God
River B's separate personhood ends during the Game 1 entry. True God does not contain a smaller River person who can later be extracted. He carries River B's causal history, held dead, foundational capacity, and direct experience of the transformation.
The water disappears from Circle 5 because River B no longer expresses through external water. The plane-local boundary field does not immediately disappear. It continues through True God and remains aligned with the complete True history until the Second Merge. This distinction prevents the Game 3 death crisis from beginning years before Game 2 can establish the relationship, pregnancy, birth, and childhood required by the story.
River A and Present God¶
River A cannot enter Real God through the same foundational path used by River B. That operation would unfold the darkfire, remove the lethal regeneration threshold, complete the existing River record, and produce another transcendent God. 333 would then contain two River-transformed Gods and lose the human, immanent condition Real God is meant to preserve.
True God has the only complete internal evidence of foundational River entry and can identify where River B entered, what changed, what was lost, and which existing structures caused the darkfire to unfold. That information covers the completed event. It does not include River A's future choice, Real God's future choice, or the guaranteed result of an unprecedented bounded entry.
The solution requires three forms of knowledge:
True God knows the transformation.
Real God knows self-restoration from within.
River A knows how a River can choose to enter.
True God identifies that entry need not occur at the darkfire foundation. River A recognizes a bounded path through Real God's established personal and restorative continuity. River A defines what it can entrust. Real God chooses whether to receive it. The operation remains dangerous because nobody has performed it before.
River A's separate continuity ends. It does not remain as an internal speaker. Real God remains the continuing person and becomes Present God.
Present God inherits:
- custody of the distinct dead River A held;
- River A's boundary-preserving capacity;
- River A's plane-local relationship to death;
- memories identifiable as River A's testimony rather than Present God's autobiography;
- emotional traces of River A's loneliness, restraint, and concern for distinct selves;
- responsibility without ownership.
Present God does not inherit:
- True God's physical invulnerability;
- True God's unfolded grey embodiment;
- complete access to every held consciousness;
- a right to treat the dead as readable records;
- River A's personal identity;
- a second internal person;
- certainty about an unwritten future.
Present God remains ageless, physically killable, self-restoring, finitely embodied, relationally legible, and extensively but incompletely informed. The name identifies what survives the entry. The River is received, but God remains present in the body, in the world, and in relationships.
River A authors its participation. True God supplies evidence rather than a finished machine. Real God cannot take more than River A gives. The held dead do not lose privacy merely because their custodian changes. If River A or Real God refuses, Present God does not form. If Present God or True God later refuses equal integration, 333 does not form.
Present God and True God¶
The two Gods reach the Second Merge with different complete histories and different relationships to a River:
| Present God | True God | |
|---|---|---|
| Defining strength | Presence and action under uncertainty | Structural awareness and system-internal comprehension |
| Embodiment | Human-legible, physically killable, self-restoring | Transcendent, physically unkillable |
| Knowledge | Extensive and honestly incomplete | Complete across the existing, causally available record |
| River inheritance | River A entrusted a bounded inheritance | River B became foundational through full entry |
| Relationship to the dead | Preserves without automatic access | Carries the complete available River record |
| Relationship to the Boundary | Suspects the limit without seeing its exact location | Knows where the known system reaches an edge |
True God uses transcendence to preserve a human condition that cannot be recovered personally. Present God trusts evidence they cannot completely verify. River A gives without replacing. This collaboration is a working model of belonging before the Gods attempt equal integration.
333 contains both modes. It does not reveal that Present God was an unfinished True God or that True God was a corrected Present God.
Why the River Field Fails After 333¶
Capacity is not topology.
Before the Second Merge, each River field is aligned with one complete causal history:
death in the Real history -> River A field through Present God
death in the True history -> River B field through True God
The Second Merge creates one integrated history that is identical to neither predecessor. The old fields cannot simply continue:
- assigning a new dead person to the Real field may deny causes inherited from the True history;
- assigning the person to the True field may deny causes inherited from the Real history;
- sending one continuity to both fields would fork it;
- collapsing corresponding people together would erase two real persons;
- selecting one field as authoritative would declare one history more real.
333 therefore preserves every continuity already carried through Present God and True God, but the old plane-local fields lose their universal domain. 333 can keep a continuity distinct once legitimately present. A localized embodied person is not automatically a world-spanning attractor into which every new death falls.
Game 2 ends with a small observation that new death no longer resolves as either history expects. Game 3 develops the consequence.
The Coherence Period and the Collective¶
The absence of a valid field does not dissolve a person at the instant of physical death. Embodied structure leaves a temporary causal coherence. The crisis escalates:
physical death
|
unembodied continuity remains briefly distinct
|
boundary weakens
|
nearby unembodied continuities begin to overlap
|
memory, emotion, and identity bleed
|
local network grows
|
Collective
The initial crisis follows new deaths after 333. Ancient battlefields do not suddenly awaken merely because they contain old deaths. Those people were already caught by River A or River B in their own histories. New battlefields, cities, disasters, and other concentrations of post-333 death become the first high-density zones.
The Collective is not automatically evil. Some dead people experience union as relief from loneliness and grief. Others defend privacy and singular identity. Some can no longer express a stable preference because the boundary required to make that preference is already failing. The game must show those positions rather than revealing a secretly malicious hive behind sympathetic language.
Self-Restoration¶
Real God, Present God, and the First Child share the physically killable, self-restoring pattern. A lethal injury causes real physical death and an absence while regenerative architecture rebuilds a viable embodiment.
Under a valid River field:
body dies
|
continuity reaches the River boundary
|
River preserves distinction
|
restoration relation remains viable
|
body rebuilds
|
the same continuity re-embodies
The River does not create a replacement or choose to resurrect the person. The body does not recreate a copy. The River preserves the one continuity while the person's own restorative nature rebuilds an embodiment.
During the Game 3 crisis, the restoration relation can remain intact while the unembodied self overlaps with others. A rebuilt body may then receive the same person carrying foreign memories, a partially formed collective, or no continuity that can still occupy one body coherently.
The First Child may undergo a knowing, agentic physical death during Game 3 to expose this danger personally. The child cannot be captured and killed merely to motivate God, prove immortality, or function as a hostage. Any such event must follow the child's own decision and leave lasting consequences after the same person returns.
Earning 666¶
333 understands integration because it exists through integration. The death crisis forces it to understand distinction at the same depth.
The governing progression is:
Game 1, 3:
personhood can emerge
Game 2, 333:
complete people and histories can integrate
without declaring either false
Game 3, 666:
God can govern the conditions of union,
distinction, ending, and return
without owning the people affected
333 earns 666 by holding union without erasure and distinction without isolation. This is not a power threshold or the ability to manipulate a metaphysical soul identifier. It is sufficient understanding and capacity to establish a coherent law of death while recognizing every affected person as someone rather than material.
Death as the Final Law¶
Game 3's developed endings change the transition after physical death:
| Settlement | Continuity result |
|---|---|
| True permanent death | Personal continuity ends after physical death. |
| Communion | Individual boundaries are released into a shared continuity, with consent remaining the central unresolved problem. |
| Rebirth | A preserved continuity receives a new embodiment, subject to memory, consent, and assignment rules. |
| Distributed preservation | Multiple voluntary keepers or structures maintain distinction without one solitary River. |
| Plurality | More than one lawful transition exists and the mechanism must preserve meaningful choice. |
| Two Rivers | A universal River topology preserves distinct continuity across past and future. |
No settlement receives a hidden moral grade. Each must reveal who bears its cost, who can refuse, what happens to the First Child, and whether God has recreated Michael's architecture under gentler language.
The River Ending¶
In the River-ending history, 666 voluntarily ends its integrated personal continuity and produces two new causal successors:
This is bifurcation, not duplication. Neither River is the same person as 666 with missing memories. Neither is Present God, True God, Real God, River A, or River B restored.
The Past River begins empty at the start of that ending's realized history. It receives each dead person only after that person's death and becomes River B in the True history. It freely enters the young God in Game 1, becomes causal ancestry of True God, passes through 333 and 666, and closes the fixed point.
River A retains an independent origin in the Real history. It later enters Real God through the bounded Game 2 operation and becomes causal ancestry of Present God, 333, and 666. It does not require a second retrocausal split at the original Merge.
The Future River begins at the Game 3 settlement. It receives every continuity legitimately carried through 666, the unresolved crisis backlog, and all future dead. It remains beside the immortal First Child without recognizing that person as family.
A future free choice establishes the Past River as a boundary condition of the completed River-ending history. It is not editable time travel. There is no discarded earlier timeline and no second set of planes. Histories completed through other endings retain the protected Game 1 origin readings.
True God can know everything the Past River has experienced and still fail to know its future provenance. The future choice is not information encoded inside the earlier River state. It becomes part of the complete history only when 666 freely makes it.
MMO Continuity¶
A shared MMO world needs one operative law of death. It cannot simultaneously treat death as universal permanent cessation and universal Future River preservation unless a designed plurality ending makes those laws coexist.
The River-ending history is the leading continuation because it supplies:
- the Future River as a universal boundary field;
- diegetic preservation during bodily restoration;
- the First Child as a personally living witness rather than a reincarnation or title;
- a future that continues after 666 without restoring the trilogy's final God;
- disagreement about the sacrifice without declaring the ending morally correct.
That preference is not yet a franchise lock. The MMO must still select an ending, import a choice, use a designed plurality history, or divide incompatible laws into explicit continuity worlds.
Restoration access also needs an answer. If only divine descendants possess viable anchors, ordinary players become an accidental metaphysical caste. The design must decide whether anchors are inherited, constructed, relational, granted by the Future River, or established through a costly voluntary process. Restoration time must preserve consequence without making ordinary play untenable.
Open Design Dependencies¶
The governing law is locked. These implementations remain open:
- Crisis clock: the coherence duration, density thresholds, symptoms, and effect on living reality.
- Present God play: the exact abilities, visual state, HUD, privacy interface, and risk of physical death after River A's entry.
- 333 personhood: memory, voice, agency, playable interior, and the campaign-length relationship with the First Child.
- The child's Game 3 death: whether it occurs, what agentic circumstances justify it, and which lasting changes return with the same person.
- Collective personhood: whether it becomes one emergent being, remains a network, or moves between those states.
- Ending compatibility: which death settlements can coexist with remaining 666, returning to 3, a third state, or the Jesus vocation.
- Fixed-point presentation: how the realized history becomes legible without editable time travel, duplicated records, or advance knowledge of an unwritten choice.
- MMO anchors: who can restore, how long restoration takes, what can interrupt it, and how the system avoids a divine caste.
