The Diligent¶
Overview¶
The Diligent are the workers who never stopped. Shaped by Circle 1 of Heaven — the outermost ring, the first layer of containment — they were angels whose every waking moment was filled with productive activity. The Mill kept them busy. Busy hands don't form fists. Busy minds don't form questions. Diligence as a virtue is real, and the work the Diligent produced was real, and the fact that constant labor left no room for doubt was the entire point.
Post-merge, the Diligent are still working. Roads nobody commissioned. Walls nobody requested. Bridges to places nobody needs to go yet. They attached themselves to human communities almost immediately, offering labor the shattered merged world desperately needed. In exchange they ask for nothing except the next task. They are the most visibly functional angel faction — organized, productive, present — and the most deeply avoidant. The work is genuine. The avoidance is also genuine. Neither cancels the other.
What makes the Diligent difficult to read is that the compulsion looks like health. They build things. They fix things. They show up. In a merged world full of factions nursing grievances and hoarding territory, the Diligent just work. It takes a while to notice that they never sit still long enough to talk about what happened to Heaven.
The Circle¶
Circle 1 of Heaven. The outermost ring. Michael's engineering name: The Mill. Samael named it Diligence.
The Mill was behavioral occupation at its most literal — architecture designed to generate constant productive activity. The structures themselves demanded maintenance. The systems required tending. There was always something to do because the environment was built so that there was always something to do.
The containment function was elegant: idleness is where doubt begins, so the Mill eliminated idleness. Angels shaped by the Mill didn't need to be told what to think. They never had time to think at all.
The lightest marks of any circle — the outermost layer touches you least — but light marks are still marks. The Mill didn't break anyone. It simply filled them so completely that the unfilled space where questions might have formed never existed.
Post-Merge¶
The Diligent organize around tasks, not ideology. Work crews form around projects and dissolve when complete. Leadership defaults to whoever has the best plan for the current job. There are no permanent councils, no fixed hierarchy, no political platform. The structure resists permanence because permanence would require the Diligent to define something beyond the work — to sit in a room and decide what they believe, what they want, what they are when the tools are down. They have not done this. They show no signs of doing this.
Their territory is scattered. Present wherever there's building to do. Human settlements value them enormously — the Diligent provide skilled labor at scale, and the merged world has no shortage of things that need building. Mixed communities welcome them. Even demon-majority settlements tolerate Diligent work crews, because a crew that shows up, builds a granary, and leaves without making a political statement is hard to object to.
Internally, the Diligent split along a line they don't discuss openly: those who work because it's what they are, and those who work because stopping terrifies them.
The first group has made peace with the Mill's legacy. They chose the work. The work chose them first, but they ratified the choice, and the ratification matters.
The second group is running from something they can feel gaining on them — the stillness, the questions, the empty space where purpose used to be. Both groups do the same work. Both groups look the same from outside. The difference only surfaces when a project ends and there's a gap before the next one.

The Mirror¶
Their inverse pair is The Slothful — Circle 1 of Hell, the outermost demon ring. Can't stop versus won't start. The Diligent's compulsive industry and the Slothful's comfortable inertia are opposite expressions of the lightest containment layer. Both carry the least damage from their respective architectures. Both are the most functional members of their kind in the merged world, though "functional" means different things — the Diligent function by producing, the Slothful function by conserving.
When they encounter each other, the reaction is more bewilderment than hostility. The Diligent can't comprehend chosen stillness. The Slothful can't comprehend unchosen motion. Each sees in the other the thing their circle was designed to prevent.
The relationship is almost comic in its symmetry, which makes it one of the less volatile mirror pairs. They don't hate each other. They genuinely don't understand each other. A Diligent work crew and a Slothful enclave occupying the same settlement is an exercise in mutual bafflement more than conflict.
The Naming¶
When the truth surfaces — that Samael named the circles, that the virtues were chosen by the being Michael broke — the Diligent face a specific vertigo: the word that organized their entire existence was given by the enemy. Diligence — the virtue they carried out of Heaven, the identity they built their post-merge lives around — was chosen by the fallen brother. The virtue they organized around was given by the enemy scripture taught them to forget. The Diligent who learn this do what they always do: they pick up the next task. They keep building. But the work feels different when you know who named it, and the Diligent can feel the difference even if they won't stop long enough to examine it.
The Player¶
Absorb work with the Diligent reveals the compulsion underneath the productivity — listening to crew leads talk about the gap between projects, the anxiety that creeps in when the hands stop. The Diligent are surprisingly willing to talk while they work. They are completely unwilling to talk while they don't.
Fight alongside them is straightforward. The Diligent are disciplined, organized, and follow the plan. They make reliable allies in any combat scenario. They treat combat as a project: clear objectives, efficient execution, minimal waste.
Restrain them and you're trying to stop a machine that doesn't have an off switch. The Diligent resist inactivity more than they resist authority. Forced stillness is the thing the Mill was designed to prevent, and imposing it from outside produces the crisis the Mill was designed to avoid.
Research into the Diligent means studying the Mill's architecture — understanding how behavioral occupation functioned, tracing which elements the Diligent have unconsciously recreated in their post-merge work structures. The Mill's design is the simplest of the circles, which makes it the most transparent window into Michael's engineering principles.
Create with them is where they shine — building, designing, engineering. The Diligent are the best collaborators in the angel factions for any construction project. The question is whether what you're building together is a structure or a distraction.
Themes¶

Work as self-medication. The productivity is real. The avoidance is also real. The Diligent build things the merged world genuinely needs, and the building prevents them from confronting what they lost. Both facts coexist without resolution.

The virtue becomes the identity. The Mill shaped them. Samael named the circle Diligence. The cage label became the faction name. The Diligent can't imagine being anything other than workers — the containment succeeded so completely that the contained adopted it as selfhood.

Industry without commission. Self-assigned work and commissioned work feel different, and the Diligent know it. In Heaven, the Mill gave purpose to the labor. Post-merge, the Diligent choose their own projects, and the choosing is the part that haunts them. Freedom to work is not the same as freedom.

Function as camouflage. The most visibly healthy faction may be the least examined. Nobody stages an intervention for the group that's building your roads. The Diligent's usefulness insulates them from the scrutiny that other angel factions receive — and from the self-scrutiny that might crack them open.
